Do You Give Space for Diversity in your Family?

"A Family at the Bookstore" cartoon by nakedpastor David Hayward

Do You Give Space for Diversity in your Family?

(Description of Cartoon: A family of 6 is in a bookstore. One's looking in the Buddhism section, another in Christian, another in New Age, another in Atheism, another in Science, another in Philosophy.)

Lisa and I determined early that we would allow each other to be authentically ourselves.

We determined the same thing in our parenting life: we would allow our children to be authentically themselves.

I don't even like the word "allow". "Give space" is better.

In other words: GET OUT OF THE WAY!

Let them grow up as themselves.

As a result... Lisa is her authentic self. I'm my authentic self. And our kids are their authentic selves. It is delightful to experience.

But before you can do this, you have to forsake the fear that religion and those in authority and everyone else including family wants to instill in you... that if left to your own devices you'll end up in Hell.

Love realizes this is a lie.

Love lets live.

Love is manifested in diversity, NOT conformity, uniformity, and homogeneity.

As I keep saying, it is not compatibility of beliefs that unifies us, but love.

I talk all about this in my new book, "Til Doubt Do Us Part: When Changing Beliefs Change Your Marriage", available on Amazon and Kindle.
