in advocacy of agony

"… there is no proper public, no listener to adequately receive their testimony" (Slavoj Žižek)
Surely the key feature of Christianity is its advocacy of agony. Primo Levi suggested that Hitler did things so appalling to Jews in concentration camps that no one would believe it unless they had been there. Girls were repeatedly raped during the Bosnian war in the 1990s. The atrocities were so horrific and unbelievable that no one would listen to their story. Many of them ended up committing suicide. We point the finger of accusation at the Catholic Church for silencing the sexual abuse happening within its walls. But is this not just the blunt end of the wedge of silencing milder forms of abuse? Those who have suffered at the hands of the church, its leaders and its members, must be allowed to tell their story to believing and sympathetic ears or the possibility of healing is almost closed to them. This is largely what nakedpastor is about. Need to talk? I'm a great listener. Email me and we can arrange it: haywardart at gmail dot com (read more…)
