(Description: A man in front of a church. One sign says, “All Welcome”. The other sign said, “Whites Only” but he painted red paint over “Whites” and painted in “Straights”. Now it says, “Straights Only”.)
I’m often asked why I wouldn’t attend a non-affirming church.
I say it would be the same as me eating at a whites only restaurant.
It not only makes me complicit but perpetuates the systemic racism that allows for such atrocities.
This man thinks he’s progressive and no longer racist. He thinks he has biblical authority to discriminate against LGBTQ people. At the root of both of his discriminations is his feeling of supremacy that manifests against anyone different.
This feeling of supremacy is rampant, fueling racism, misogyny, countless phobias such as homophobia, transphobia, Islamophobia, and so on, and being demonstrated in endless discriminations.
If the Church started losing mass numbers of members because of the Church’s resolution to be non-affirming, it would force the Church to reconsider.
Instead, people continuing to attend hoping that one day things might change perpetuates the system and permits its discrimination.
The Church counts on our complicity and continues its injustice under the cloaks of dialogues, deliberations, and delays.
