When it's Time to Leave the Church
No. Not at noon. I'm talking about permanently.
You can leave church for a million reasons: insufficient teaching, bad coffee, no youth group, lousy worship band, uncomfortable chairs, etcetera, etcetera.
But, to me, there are two necessary reasons to leave the church:
One, when you are being abused, manipulated, controlled, coerced, pressured, and so on.
Two, when you can no longer exercise your freedom.
I know a lot of people who have left the church for the first reason.
I know a lot of people who should leave the church for the second.
My own story is I experienced a lot of the first in the church. I would move on to find a safer place.
But the final reason I officially left the church is for the second reason.
Granted, I always migrated to churches where I felt I could exercise my freedom. But then somewhere along the way I found a line that I could not cross. My ability to exercise my freedom was hampered and I had to leave.
The last reason I left the church in 2010 was for this reason.
I felt completely free until I realized I wasn’t fully free to become who I am.
I bumped into the exterior bars of the cage I didn’t know were there until I bumped into them.
That’s when I walked out of the cage into my cageless world.
The thing about being trapped is you don’t realize it until you meet the boundary that you must not cross.
I used to be happy in my experience of freedom because the cage always seemed large enough to satisfy me at that time.
Finally… FINALLY!… I came to understand that there is no cage.
In fact, one night I “saw” that the bars of my cage were in my own mind.
Imaginary! I wasn’t trapped at all. I was only afraid of the consequences of living out my freedom.
Freedom is scary.
But, if you move out in your freedom in spite of the fear (this takes courage) you will find that you’ve always been free. You’ve just been gradually learning how to live in a cageless world.
I learned how to do it.
You can too!
Believe me, it’s wonderful.
